Justice Min Submits Judicial Reform Legislation To Unlock EU Funds

HUNGARY

Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga has posted on her ministry's FB account that the gov't is to submit judicial reform legislation to the National Assembly as part of the process to unlock suspended EU funds.

  • Varga: "Based on yesterday's information from the Commissioner responsible for the enforcement of law, the Government initiated the submission of the judicial package discussed with the European Commission the Parliament. We managed to accomplish what we undertook even in the greatest domestic and international opposition. We continue to work to ensure that Hungarian people receive the resources they deserve as soon as possible."
  • The technical agreement, reached earlier this week, could see a EUR13bn portion of the EUR22bn EU catch-up funds allocated to the Hungarian budget released. The reforms to be enacted meet the demands that any cohesion funds spent are in line with the so-called 'horizontal condition' of compliance with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights that prevents "any discrimination based on sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation".
