Kazakh President: Country Has Weathered 'Coup d'Etat'

EMERGING MARKETS

Kazakhstani President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev delivering an address has stated that the country has 'weathered a coup d'etat', and that he would provide evidence of such.

  • Says that the rebellious activities of the past week were coordinated by a single, unnamed 'centre'.
  • Says 16 members of the secutiry forces were killed with over 1,300 injured while the number of civilians killed was 'being checked'.
  • Says that the largest city, Almaty, and nine other regional capitals were held by 'bandits'.
  • Says that the 'counter-terrorism operation', as well as the operation by Russian-led CTSO would soon come to an end. Over 2,000 Russian troops deployed as part of operation.
  • Tokayev to make proposals on a new gov't on 11 January.
  • Remains to be seen whether the protests have been put down for the long term, or whether this was the first in a series of actions intended to result in regime change.
