Kirby: Pres Tsai Ing-Wen's US "Transit" Consistent With One-China Policy

US

MNI London: White House National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby has told reporters that a trip to the United States from Taiwanese President Tsai ing-Wen which begins today is consistent with the principle of the US "One-China" Policy and shouldn't be used by China "as a pretext to step up aggressive activity around the Taiwan Strait."

  • Kirby: "This transit is consistent with our long-standing unofficial relationship with Taiwan and is consistent with the One-China Policy, which remains unchanged."
  • Kirby: "It is Taiwan's decision to make these transits based upon their own travel. Transits are not visits, they are private and they are unofficial."
  • Kirby says that this kind of trip "is not new," stating that "every Taiwan president has transited the United States," and "Tsai herself has transited the US six times since taking office in 2016, each time without incident."
  • Kirby: "The United State and China have differences when it comes to Taiwan but we have managed those differences for more than 40 years."
  • President Tsai is not expected to meet formally with any members of the Biden administration.
