Kishida Cabinet Continues To Bleed Support

JAPAN

The approval rating of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's Cabinet dropped to 36% in the latest opinion poll by Mainichi/Centre for Social Research, reaching its lowest point since Kishida took office.

  • The approval rating fell 16pp, while the proportion of respondents disapproving of the administration grew 17pp to 54%. This was the highest disapproval score since Kishida's administration was inaugurated.
  • As many as 68% of respondents were not satisfied with the recent reshuffle of Cabinet and LDP executive line-up. Only 19% said they approved of the move. The results are testament to the failure of Kishida's attempt to shore up support for his Cabinet.
  • Almost two-thirds of respondents said there was a "serious problem" with the ruling party's ties with the Unification Church, with a further 23% noting that they see "some problem."
  • Attitudes critical of the LDP's links to the controversial religious movement was evident even among its own voters, with more than 70% of LDP supporters seeing it as a problem.
