Kishida's Approval Lowest Since March In Latest Morning Consult Poll

JAPAN

Latest polling from Morning Consult shows the approval rating for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida falling to just 25%, the lowest level since March and around the point where Japanese prime ministers can begin to become concerned about their continued tenure in office. This decline in support has been mirrored among other pollsters, and could put the brakes on anynascent plansamong the Kishida gov't to call a snap general election for later in 2023.

  • A successful snap election could solidify Kishida's position ahead of the 2024 leadership conference for his governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). However, there is the prospect that an election could deliver an underperformance by the LDP. This, combined with low approval ratings (20% is seen as a critical floor), could encourage powerful factions within the LDP to consider a change of leadership come 2024.
