RUSSIA

Comments from Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov hitting wires. States that the Black Sea will never be a 'NATO sea'. This comes in the aftermath of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called for a greater NATO presence in the Black Sea's waters, with NATO members Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey all holding a coastline on the sea. 13 April marks the one-year anniversary of Ukrainian forces sinking the Russian Navy's Black Sea fleet flagship, the Moskva.

  • On the arrest and detention of WSJ journalist Evan Gershkovich, when asked if President Vladimir Putin authorised the arrest, Peskov states that the case is 'not related to the president' and that Gershkovich was 'caught red handed' engaging in espionage.
  • On jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is reported to be suffering from ill health, Peskov states that the Kremlin is 'not following the health' of Navalny, and that the Federal Prison Service has oversight.
  • Says that Russia will analyse the ruling from a court of arbitration at The Hague after Ukraine's Naftogaz stated that Russia was ordered to pay USD5bn to Ukraine in compensation for seizing assets from Ukraine’s state energy firm following Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea.
