A number of comments from Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov hitting wires. Regarding the aftermath of the Wagner mutiny, Peskov states that 'Discussions are ongoing about whether changes in law are needed after armed mutiny'. Unclear whether this could refer to the position and legality of private military companies such as Wagner or a broader imposition of martial law.
- When asked about the NYT story that General Sergei Surovikin knew in advance about the mutiny, Peskov states that "There will be alot of different speculation surrounding these events, gossip and so on. I think this is one of such example." The prospect of Surovikin having knowledge of the mutiny could be an indication of a broader dissatisfaction within the military towards the Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
- On the future of Wagner PMC in sub-Saharan Africa, Peskov states that 'Russian military advisers will continue their work in the Central African Republic'. Asked whether Russia is ready to help Wagner partners in CAR, Peskov says 'Wagner had its own business there, which had nothing to do with the Russian state.'
- Says that an envoy from the Vatican is in Moscow for talks on the conflict in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin's foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov will hold talks with the envoy, adding that the Kremlin 'highly rates the Vatican's efforts and welcomes the Pope's desire to make a contribution to ending the conflict in Ukraine.'
