Kremlin-Putin Won't Leave Ukraine, But Ready For Talks w/US

US-RUSSIA

Wires carrying comments from the Kremlin stating that President Vladimir Putin will not withdraw Russian troops from Ukraine, but is ready for talks with the US. Asked in relation to Biden comments (see below) if Russia is ready to leave Ukraine, Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov states, 'the special operation continues'.

  • Kremlin: The US still does not recognise Russia's new [annexed Ukrainian] territories, and this complicates the search for a mutual basis for talks.
  • Kremlin: The most preferable path is the achievement of our goals by diplomatic means.
  • Comes after US President Joe Biden raised the prospect of talks last night in presser following talks w/French Pres Emmanuel Macron in Washington, D.C., (See link: https://marketnews.com/biden-says-he-would-conside...). Biden stated that: "I have no immediate plans to contact Mr. Putin. Let me choose my words very carefully: I am prepared to speak with Mr. Putin if, in fact, there is an interest in him deciding he's looking for a way to end the war. He hasn't done that yet. If that's the case, in consultation with my French and my NATO friends I'll be happy to sit down with Putin to see what he has in mind. He hasn't done that yet."
  • Biden: "I'm prepared, if he's willing to talk, to find out what he's willing to do but I'll only do it in consultation with my NATO allies. I won't do it on my own."
