Kremlin: Strikes Against New Territories Aggression Against Russia

Comments from the Kremlin hitting newswires showing Moscow pressing ahead with plans to complete annexation of Ukrainian territory and proclaim de jure Russian control over swathes of Ukrainian territory. A formal announcement is expected to come from Russian President Vladimir Putin today at 0800ET, 1300BST, 1400CET.

  • Per Reuters: "Strikes against new territories incorporated into Russia will be considered act of aggression against Russia."
  • The Kremlin states that parts of Donbass People's Republic that are not currently under Russia control will be considered "de jure" part of the Russian Federation.
  • Comes as head of DPR says Ukrainian forces closing in on key Russian held town Lyman.
  • Fear amongst observers that proclamation could precipitate an escalation by Russia if Ukraine continues counterattack within newly annexed territories.
  • Kremlin continues, "goals of 'special military operation' has not changed," suggesting that Moscow's strategic goal may be to "freeze" the conflict with de facto Russian control over occupied territory, a tactic Russia has had success with in post-Soviet republics.
  • US has stated that annexations will not alter strategy of supplying military aid, intelligence, support to Ukraine in liberating territory. US Sec State Antony Blinken: "We will never recognize these areas as part of any country other than Ukraine, and we will support Ukraine for as long as it takes."
