Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Invited To Iran Amid Gas Field Dispute

NATURAL GAS

Iran’s Foreign Minister has invited his Kuwaiti counterpart to Tehran, according to Reuters, as tensions mount over the rights to the Durra gas field.

  • The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister received the invitation during a meeting with Iran’s new ambassador.
  • The invitation comes after Saudi Arabia and Kuwait reaffirmed their joint ownership rights over natural resources in the offshore Durra gas field, expected to produce 1 Bcf/day of gas and 84,000 b/day of condensates.
  • Iran said July 31 that it intends to pursue its claim over the gas field. The rights to develop Durra are contested by Iran, with the issue arising due to the no official demarcation of its maritime border in the Gulf.
