La Nina and Warm Atlantic Could Lead to Active Hurricane Season

ENERGY

AccuWeather suggest La Nina and warm Atlantic Ocean waters could encourage an especially active hurricane season this year according to ICIS last week. Last year saw a mild hurricane season as El Nino discouraged the formation of storms.

  • El Nino should transition into La Nina during the second half of the hurricane season in 2024, AccuWeather said.
  • An active season could threaten US and Mexico refinery output as well as oil and gas production with many facilities based on the coast in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Water temperatures in the Atlantic are already at levels that are typical of mid-July.
  • “Any storms that do form will have the potential to rapidly strengthen, even close to land, due to the exceptionally warm waters,” said AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter.
  • The hurricane season in the Atlantic basin starts on 1 June and runs through 30 November.
