Labour Defector Gaurav Sharma Resigns As MP, Triggering By-Election

NEW ZEALAND

Hamilton West MP Gaurav Sharma who was ousted from the Labour Party caucus for alleged disloyalty said he has resigned, which will trigger a by-election in his constituency.

  • Prime Minister Ardern called his decision a waste of taxpayer money and called on the lawmaker to continue working as an independent.
  • Sharma said he was thinking about starting a new party and intends to win the by-election and return to parliament as an independent MP.
  • He said he was "pre-empting" a Labour attempt to invoke the "Waka Jumping" legislation and remove him from parliament, even as Ardern said she had no plans to do so.
