Lagarde & de Guindos Touch On The EUR

ECB

A couple of rounds of ECB comments re: the EUR were made over the weekend:

  • ECB President Lagarde noted that "near-term price pressures will also remain subdued due to the recent appreciation of the euro exchange rate… In the current environment of elevated uncertainty, the Governing Council will carefully assess incoming information, including developments in the exchange rate, with regard to its implications for the medium-term inflation outlook. It continues to stand ready to adjust all of its instruments, as appropriate, to ensure that inflation moves towards its aim in a sustained manner, in line with its commitment to symmetry. When it comes to meeting our price stability goal, there is and there will be no complacency."
  • We also heard from ECB Vice President de Guindos who noted that the Bank doesn't target the EUR, but he conceded that it is an important variable that it monitors it when assessing the effects on price stability.
