Latest Poll Puts SPD Within 1% Of CDU

GERMANY

The latest Kantar/Focus opinion poll ahead of the German federal election shows the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) within 1% of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the narrowest gap between the two parties since April 2017.

  • Kantar/FOCUS: CDU/CSU: 22%, SPD: 21% (+2), GRÜNE: 19% (-2), FDP: 12%, AfD: 11%, Die Linke: 7%. Fieldwork 11-17 Aug, chgs w/4-10 Aug. 1,920 respondents.
  • Should the SPD's polling numbers hold up there would be a notable possibility that after several years in the doldrums the Social Democrats could emerge from the election in a position to command the chancellery as the head of a gov't involving the environmentalist Greens and the pro-business liberal Free Democrats (FDP), or the Greens and the far-left Die Linke.
  • Preferred chancellor opinion polling continues to show SPD chancellor candidate and current Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz as the clear favourite to take over from incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel, with the Greens' Annalena Baerbock and the CDU's Armin Laschet battling for second place.
