LDP Secretary General To Resign After Losing In His Constituency

LDP Secretary General Akira Amari has reportedly informed Prime Minister Kishida of his intention to step down after losing the race in his single-seat constituency (Kanagawa-13) to Hideshi Futori from the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.

  • NHK noted that this was the first defeat of a sitting LDP Secretary General since the introduction of single-seat constituencies.
  • Amari is still expected to gain a seat through proportional representation, the other component of Japan's mixed electoral system.
  • Prime Minister Kishida said that he will decide on Amari's resignation after analysing election results. Amari was responsible for overseeing the LDP's campaign.
