LDP Secretary General Akira Amari has reportedly informed Prime Minister Kishida of his intention to step down after losing the race in his single-seat constituency (Kanagawa-13) to Hideshi Futori from the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.

  • NHK noted that this was the first defeat of a sitting LDP Secretary General since the introduction of single-seat constituencies.

  • Prime Minister Kishida said that he will decide on Amari's resignation after analysing election results. Amari was responsible for overseeing the LDP's campaign.
