Le Pen Within 2% Of Macron In First Round: Kantar Poll

FRANCE

Latest first round opinion poll shows right-wing Rassembelement National leader Marine Le Pen within 2% of incumbent President Emmanuel Macron. On this basis the two would still go through to the second round run-off, but a strong performance by Le Pen would give her notable momentum going into the 24 April vote.

  • Kantar-Epoka poll: Macron (EC-RE): 25% (-4), Le Pen (RN-ID): 23% (+3), Mélenchon (LFI-LEFT): 16% (+2), Zemmour (REC-NI): 11%, Pécresse (LR-EPP): 8% (-2). +/- vs. 22-23 March 2022. Fieldwork: 4-5 April 2022. Sample size: 1,394
  • Second round polls continue to show Macron losing support, but at present still holding a slender lead over Le Pen. Notable market and political interest building in the contest, which up until late-March had been viewed as a non-event, with Macron seemingly in pole position to win comfortably in the run-off.
  • So far President Macron has refused to engage in any of the pre-election debates, arguing that in the history of the fifth republic a sitting president has not taken part in such an event.
