Leaders To Hold Regular Meetings To Aid COVID-19 Package, MFF Progress

Following a call between European Commission President Ursula von der
Leyen, European Parliament President David Sassoli, and German Chancellor
Angela Merkel (in her position as chair of the rotating Council presidency),
the Commission announced that regular meetings between the three
will take place to try to "facilitate rapid progress" of the COVID-19
recovery package and the multiannual financial framework.

  • The European Parliament is the first potential obstacle to the passage of
    the MFF, with MEPs from all sides of the political spectrum taking issue
    with the reduction in spending in certain areas (which facilitates
    spending in others).
  • The Commission's 'own resources' (the money raised by the Commission
    itself through customs levies etc. rather than that raised from member
    states) is another sticking point for MEPs.
