LNG Charter Rates Could Spike into Winter

A lack of LNG tankers due to surging demand could cause a spike in LNG costs and higher chartering rates according to S&P Global.

  • "Short-term charter vessels are still available scantily but long-term is not. There's not enough supply [of LNG carriers]," an industry source said.
  • Europe and Asia are competing for cargoes from US and Qatar amid tight global gas markets due to lower Russian supply.
  • S&P Global expect charter rates to increase further as demand picks up heading into winter and with the partial restart of Freeport LNG in November.
