López Obrador Approval Rises After Summit Of The Americas Boycott

MEXICO

According to Morning Consult, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has seen his approval rating rise from 65% to 70% this month following his boycott of the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles.

  • Lopez Obrador boycotted the event due to a disagreement with the White House over the exclusion of Cuba, Honduras, and Nicaragua for alleged human rights violations.
  • Lopez Obrador's approval rating has seen a remarkable recovery after a scandal involving his eldest son in March caused his approval to drop to a low of 54%.
  • Lopez Obrador has promised not to seek reelection in 2024 but held an unusual popularity referendum earlier this year prompting criticism from opponents that he may be taking steps towards changing the rules to enable him to stay in power beyond the constitutionally restricted single 6-year term.
  • Lopez Obrador is now the second most popular global leader on Morning Consult's approval tracker, behind Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 76%.
