LR Assembly Leader Confirms Vote Against No Confidence Motion

FRANCE

As expected, Olivier Marleix - head of the centre-right Les Republicains (LR) group in the National Assembly - has stated that he will encourage his deputies not to vote in favour of the confidence motion levied against the gov't. Speaking as part of the debate on the censure motion, Marleix stated that "Let's be clear, the problem today is not the pension reform, it's the President of the Republic." He went on to say the pension reforms that sparked the no confidence vote were 'necessary', but that President Emmanuel Macron was 'narcissistic' in his governing style.

  • Marleix criticised parties of the far-right and far-left for teaming up in an effort to oust the gov't of PM Elisabeth Borne, stating that "We will not witness these barbaric weddings between those who assume they want to create chaos and those who, silent, have no proposal to save pensions, but hope to take advantage of this chaos."
  • While some LR deputies are set to vote in favour of the motion, it appears unlikely that the required 27 of the 61 LR lawmakers will vote against party lines to oust Borne and the Cabinet.
