Lula Recovery Blocking Progress on Key Appointments, Programs

BRAZIL
  • Lula’s recovery from hip surgery continues, with the President still resting at the Presidential palace. On medical advice, he is to receive no visitors for the rest of the week. Valor write that President’s absence is holding up key appointments and programs for government, with the choices for Prosecutor General, Supreme Federal Court and the official kick-off for the PAC growth-acceleration plan all frozen ahead of Lula’s full recovery.
  • Finance Minister Haddad holds further conversations and meetings with the IMF, amid which Valor cites government sources as saying that the IMF’s reform quotas are “challenging” given the disproportionate influence of developed markets within the IMF itself.
  • The Monday FOCUS survey is due imminently, while BCB’s Galipolo takes part in a central bank live stream from 2pm local time (1800BST/1300ET). The livestream comes as part of the bank’s open meeting with the Rio de Janerio Industries Federation.
  • Haddad will be in attendance of a press conference detailing the Desenrola program, while Campos Neto attends working sessions with other Portuguese speaking central bank heads from Lisbon.
