Macron Following Nice, Avignon, Saudi Incidents: France Is Under Attack
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking from Nice, says that France is under attack from Islamist terrorists.
- Macron states that additional troops have been mobilised following the attack on a church congregation in the city of Nice this morning that saw three people killed by an Islamist terrorist with a knife. Troops will be deployed to protect schools, places of worship and other high-risk locations.
- Earlier today, in the southern city of Avignon, police shot dead an individual wielding a knife and threatening members of the public who media have also identified as an Islamist terrorist.
- Also today, Saudi Arabian police arrested a man who attacked a security guard with a 'sharp object' outside the French consulate in the city of Jeddah.
- These attacks come as tensions between the French gov't and the Muslim world spike. Following the murder of French teacher Samuel Paty in mid-October by an Islamist terrorist after showing his pupils cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed, Macron announced he would fight 'Islamist separatism' in France.
- Satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's publication of cartoons of Muhammed as well as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have also seemingly stoked Islamist anger against France.
- The backlash from Muslim countries shows no sign of reducing, with former Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad stating as part of a Twitter thread that "Muslims have a right to be angry and to kill millions of French people for the massacres of the past.", a message that was subsequently removed by Twitter for inciting violence.
