Macron Leads In 2nd Round Polls As Les Republicains Prep For 1st Debate

FRANCE

French President Emmanuel Macron leads in all latest hypothetical 2nd round election match-ups in the latest polling from Ifop Opinion. This cements his place as the current frontrunner for the spring 2022 presidential election. The polls come as the centre-right Les Republicains (LR) prepare for the first of their primary debates taking place this evening.

  • Second round hypothetical polling (Ifop, 3-5 Nov, 1,507 respondents, chgs w/Oct 2021)
    • Emmanuel Macron (REM) 56% =, Marine Le Pen (RN) 44% =
    • Emmanuel Macron (REM) 59% -1, Eric Zemmour (Ind) 41% +1
    • Emmanuel Macron (REM) 51% +1, Xavier Bertrand (LR) 49% -1
    • Emmanuel Macron (REM) 55% -4, Valerie Pecresse (LR) 45% +4
    • Emmanuel Macron (REM) 56%, Michel Barnier (LR) 44%
  • Les Republicains' debate takes place tonight on LCI at 2040CET (1440ET, 1940GMT). While Bertrand performs the best in opinion polling - coming top among potential LR candidates in 1st round polling and offering a stiff challenge to Macron in 2nd round polls - he is not guaranteed the nomination. LR members lean to the right, and former European Commissioner Michel Barnier's hard-line comments on immigration could put him in good stead for an unexpected run for the LR nomination.
