Macron: Sanctions On Russia Will Factor In Energy Sector

From President Emmanuel Macron's address to the nation:

  • "Freedom of Ukraine is our freedom. We will respond without weakness to this act of war. Sanctions against Russia will factor in the energy sector and will be without weakness. There will be longstanding consequences."
  • "The events of this night are a turning point in the history of Europe and our country, they will have lasting and profound consequences on our lives, on the geopolitics of our continent."
  • Should be noted that the UK and France (two major nations where heads of gov't have given official statements) use much less Russian gas than many other EU member states, notably Germany and Italy. Reactions and commitments to sanctions from Rome and Berlin should be watched carefully to gauge how tough energy sanctions could be.
