Magnitude Of EM ETF Inflows Recovers, Streak Continues

  • Exchange-traded funds that buy emerging market stocks and bonds recorded inflows for a 34th straight week. The weekly size of increases rose to $768.5 million in the week ended June 25, compared to last week's tiny increase of just $10.7 million.
  • Inflows were driven by emerging equity funds, registering inflows of ~$850 million, whereas bond fund flows actually fell by ~$82 million.
  • The $84.4 billion Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF, or VWO, received $545 million, the largest inflow this month.
  • By country, China and Hong Kong scored the biggest addition, amounting to $329.5 million and making up over a third of the inflows, while investors pulled the most money from Peru.
  • The MSCI Emerging Markets Index closed up 1.3% from the previous week.
