Manchin Supports 9 Dems Demanding Bipart Infra Bill Before USD3.5trn Package

US

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has offered his support of nine moderate House Democrats who are demanding the House pass the USD1trn bipartisan infrastructure package before voting on the budget resolution that relates to the White House's USD3.5trn American Families Plan.

  • Manchin is seen as the most conservative Senate Democrat and has previously stated his opposition to a package as large as the USD3.5trn in spending proposed by the White House.

  • Currently Speaker Nancy Pelosi finds herself at odds with nine House Democrats led by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), who are demanding that the House vote first on the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill before moving onto the budget resolution related to the reconciliation bill that would put forward the USD3.5trn plan.
  • However, on the other wing of the House Democratic caucus, leftist members have demanded that the budget resolution is passed before the bipartisan package.
  • Pelosi is in a difficult position, as she can only afford to lose three votes on the budget resolution given the Dems narrow majority and the unity of GOP members in opposing the larger spending plan. Without breaking apart the group of moderate Dems in the House, the Speaker will not be able to get the BR through before the bipartisan package.
