Manchin To White House: Allow Keystone XL Pipeline To Proceed

US

In a statement issued in the wake of President Biden's decision to release 50mn barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reseve, influential Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has called on the White House to allow the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada.

  • The senior senator from West Virginia has become one of the most influential and powerful politicians in the US since Biden took office. With a 50-50 split in the Senate, Manchin - as reliably the most right-wing Democrat - often has the casting vote when issues are split on party lines, deciding whether the Democrats fail 51-49 or if the vote is tied and goes to VP Kamala Harris.
  • Manchin says that the release 'does not solve for the self-inflicted wound that shortsighted energy policy is having on our nation'.
