McCarthy Challenges Biden To Reach At By End Of Week For Debt Limit Talks

US

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has penned a letter to President Biden challenging him to "drop the partisanship," and "reach out" to arrange a meeting on debt ceiling talks by the end of the week.

  • McCarthy said to Biden: "Nearly two months ago, you and I sat down to discuss a path forward on the debt limit. Since that time, however, you and you team have been completely missing in action on any meaningful follow up."
  • "With each passing day I am incredibly concerned that you are putting an already fragile economy in jeopardy by insisting on your extreme position of refusing to negotiate..."
  • "I have no interest in brinksmanship... but we cannot continue to kick the can down the road and ignore America's ballooning national debt..."
  • McCarthy says the "best way to reduce the national debt," is to "Limit Spending, Save Taxpayer Money, and Grow the Economy."
  • The White House is likely to continue to refuse to open negotiations until the House GOP releases a FY24 budget proposal. House Republican leadership have been non-committal on a date for a budget with most expecting it to come some time in May.
