McCarthy: Debt Ceiling Plan By Sunday Is "Doable"

US

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has told reporters that he believes negotiating a debt ceiling plan by Sunday is "doable" following remarks from President Biden at the White House appearing to identify Sunday as the date he expects to sign off on a final deal. Biden said he would have "more to say on the issue" at a press conference on Sunday.

  • McCarthy, says that the "timeline remains short," but says "the only question on whether we have a 'Biden default' or not is the president himself."
  • McCarthy says "this is the worst way to govern" and blamed Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen for failing to provide an accurate timeline for default.
  • McCarthy dismisses House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' (D-NY) discharge motion and as a "political game" and says "he doesn't think its going anywhere."
  • McCarthy says: "Lets put caps on what future Congress' can spend. Let them grow, but only by 1%."
  • The final piece of the jigsaw remains work requirements for social welfare programmes. Biden conceded some work requirements could be "possible" but not "of any consequence.”
  • McCarthy outright rejected the prospect of a tax hike on the wealthy in response to a question from the press.
