US

Capitol Hill reporters covering the House Republican caucus meeting called by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to whip support for his Debt Limit package have indicated that McCarthy may have the requisite support to pass the bill in a House vote today.

  • Full analysis of the last-minute action on the bill and the vote calculus today see: US Daily Brief
  • According to Punchbowl's Jake Sherman, Rep Chip Roy (R-TX), a key Republican from the House Freedom Caucus who sits on the House Rules Committee, said "they shouldn’t have just 218 votes, but it should be a unanimous vote for this plan."
  • Politico's Olivia Beavers reports that a number of Freedom Caucus members have indicated that they are willing to change their votes to "yes" but moderate Rep Nancy Mace (R-SC) remains unconfirmed.
  • Politico's Meredith Lee Hill reports that McCarthy's amendment on biofuels appears to have moved all the Midwestern holdouts into the "yes" camp.
  • It appears likely that McCarthy will pass the package and although it will be rejected by the Democrat-led Senate, or vetoed by President Biden, it will mark the first significant step made by Republicans to force Democrat to open negotiations on govt spending.
