McCarthy: Negotiators To Work 24 Hours A Day Until Deal Reached

US

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), has delivered an update to the press as negotiators prepare to resume another day of talks on the debt limit.

  • McCarthy said negotiators "made some progress" yesterday in talks which went "well past midnight," but there are "still some outstanding issues."
  • McCarthy: "I have instructed negotiators to work 24 hours a day to get a debt ceiling deal."
  • Politico writes: “...Republicans and the White House are closing the gap on spending levels,” but, “One person briefed on the negotiations said that while the gap has narrowed, the two sides are still tens of billions of dollars apart.”
  • House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and McCarthy confirmed yesterday that lawmakers will be dispatched home for the Memorial Day weekend but will be summoned back to Washington if a deal emerges.
  • Punchbowl News reports reports that a deal, finalised by the weekend, could be brought to the House floor for a vote as early as Tuesday but notes, “it will be a high-wire 10 days or so on Capitol Hill from now until the end of next week.”
