McCarthy To Establish House Select Committee On China

MNI London: Speaker-elect of the United State House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has announced that he will establish a new House panel focused on China, should he become Speaker in January.

  • McCarthy tweeted today: "Under a Republican majority, I will establish a China Select Committee to expose and fight against the Chinese Communist Party's cyber, trade, and military threats against America."
  • McCarthy has tapped up Rep Mike Gallagher (R-WI) to head the committee: "Mike Gallagher is exceptionally qualified and is the right person to lead and advance this important agenda at this vital moment.”
  • Gallagher said in a statement: "The Select Committee on China will push back in bipartisan fashion before it's too late. Even in divided government, we have an opportunity to build a united front against CCP aggression."
  • McCarthy's pathway to the Speaker's gavel isn't yet assured. The Minority Leader is facing an ongoing revolt from the right-wing of the GOP which must be overcome before a full House vote on January 3.
