McCarthy: "We Are Nowhere Near A Deal"

Jake Sherman at Punchbowl News has tweeted comments from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stating that he is "nowhere near a deal" with President Biden on the debt limit as talks are set to resume shortly.

  • According to Sherman, McCarthy told a closed House GOP meeting: “We are nowhere near a deal yet.”
  • McCarthy: “I told the president three things: No clean debt limit, no raising taxes, spend less money. “Remember where we were - they refused to negotiate."
  • McCarthy: “We owe [GOP negotiator Rep] Garret Graves and [Rep] Patrick McHenry a round of applause. They made a mistake to not negotiate. Let's stay strong…"
  • According to Sherman, McCarthy, "also showed a video with a chronology of democrats saying they wouldn’t negotiate."
  • McCarthy's comments signal his is preparing to continue to take a hardline position on negotiations with President Biden as talks enter the final stages.
  • Prevailing wisdom is that a deal will be struck but one side must budge. It should be noted that McCarthy's job as Speaker may be threated if he is seen as softening on negotiations with Biden, perhaps necessitating a more outwardly hardline position.
