Meloni-Italy Won't Be 'Weak Link' In Western Alliance Under FdI-Led Gov't

ITALY

Speaking to Reuters on 25 August, leader of the right-wing nationalist Brothers of Italy (FdI) and front runner to replace PM Mario Draghi, Giorgia Meloni, has stated that a gov't involving her party will not allow Italy to become the 'weak link' in the Western alliance against Russia. Also states that Italy will stand up to Chinese economic expansionism.

  • Meloni: "Ukraine ... is the tip of the iceberg of a conflict whose objective is the revision of the world order. Russia is louder at present and China is quieter, but its penetration is reaching everywhere,"
  • Meloni: "There is no political will on my part to favour Chinese expansion into Italy or Europe,"
  • Meloni on perceptions of potential difficulties between Rome and Brussels under FdI-led gov't: "It simply means explaining that the defence of national interests is as important to us as it is to the French and Germans,"
Opinion polling continues to show her party in pole position to lead the next gov't. The centre-right coalition of FdI, the right-wing populist League, centre-right Forza Italia, and liberal conservative Us Moderates polls around 45-50%. This compares to around 30% for the centre-left coalition led by the social democratic Democratic Party (PD).
