MEXICO: MNI Publishes Election Preview

MEXICO

Mexico holds its general election on Sunday 2 June to elect the successor to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, commonly known as ‘AMLO’, who has governed for the past six years. AMLO leaves office with something of a mixed legacy, with cartel-related violence still commonplace nationwide and the economy recording sluggish growth. However, his approval ratings (66% in April) remain very high in comparison with other world leaders that have been in power as long as he has. This is indicative that the public remains supportive of his domestic-focused left-wing nationalist policy agenda.

  • In this preview we include explainers on how the election will work and who the main candidates are, scenario analysis with assigned probabilities, a financial markets and macro outlook, a commodities overview, and key views from sell-side analysts on the election outcome.
