Mexico’s Presidential Frontrunner to Cut Down on Refinery Waste

Mexican presidential front-runner Claudia Sheinbaum plans to invest in state-owned Pemex’s refineries to reduce the volumes of low-value fuels and instead boost motor fuels, according to Reuters.

  • Pemex has been producing record levels of heavy fuels, with 260k b/d of fuel oil in 2023, compared to 252k b/d of gasoline.
  • Fuel oil is mainly burnt for electricity generation in Mexico, considered a waste product.
  • The plans could include the possibility of building a new coking unit at the Salamanca refinery to increase gasoline and diesel production.
