Michel: "See Over Next Few Days" What Next Brexit Steps Are

EUROPEAN COUNCIL

European Council President Charles Michel talking to reporters in Brussels says that the EU is still negotiating with the UK on a Brexit deal and "we'll see over the next few days" what the next steps in Brexit are, potentially indicating that talks may be allowed to extend up to the European Council summit on 10-11 December.

  • Michel says the Council Summit must take place in-person in Brussels, saying that, "the agenda requires that we look in each other's eyes".
  • Issues similar comments to many other EU officials/politicians and indeed those in the UK that 'we are ready for all possible outcomes' and 'we want a deal but not at any cost'.
  • 'EU member state decision to depend on balance of any EU-UK trade deal, especially on fisheries, LPF, governance'
  • 'We have clear European standards, the UK has choices to make'.
  • On the EU long-term budget Michel says that the 'rule of law' mechanism is a key issue linked to the 'EU's DNA'. However, he remains 'optimistic' a deal on the multiannual financial framework can be reached.
