Military leaders seize power in OPEC member Gabon

  • Military officers in oil producing Gabon announced Aug. 30 that they had seized power following the electoral commission’s declaration that long-serving President Ali Bongo had won a third term
  • Gabon, a member of OPEC, exports around 200k b/d of oil. Its oil reserves are thought to be around 2m bbl. There have been no reports of any impact on production thus far.
  • The Bongo family has ruled Gabon for the last 56 years. The current President took office in 2009, succeeding his father Omar, who ruled for over 40 years.
  • This would mark the eighth coup across Western and Central Africa since 2020.
