Minister Flags Gradual Phase-Out Of Anti-Inflation Measures, KO Closes Polling Gap With PiS

POLAND
  • Climate and Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska told RMF FM radio that Poland cannot afford a full extension of the current electricity, heat and gas freezes beyond 1H24 due to budget constraints. She added that the government is now working on measures that would reduce the impact from unfreezing prices to low-income households and large families. This falls in line with the central bank's assumption of a gradual phase-out of existing anti-inflationary measures, albeit the exact parameters of the revised measures are yet to be unveiled.
  • A new United Surveys/WP.pl opinion poll showed that the main opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party is now virtually neck-and-neck with the ruling Civic Coalition (KO) amid growing popular support for holding PiS officials to account. Some analysts are suggesting that PiS might fall sustainably to the second place for the first time in a decade after the upcoming local elections, in which an emerging coalition between KO and the New Left might take control over most regional legislatures.
  • Onet.pl suggests that two convicted PiS officials (Mariusz Kaminski and Maciej Wasik) are unlikely to run in the local elections but may contest the European elections. Their potential departure to Brussels/Strasbourg would lower the tensions around their earlier ouster from the Polish parliament, which they continue to contest.
  • Senior lawmaker Ryszard Petru said that the 2024 budget bill will likely have to be amended, possibly in June or July, amid the need to consolidate public finances.
