Daily Mirror reporter John Stevens reports that Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt will not stand to be Conservative party leader following the resignation of PM Liz Truss as party head minutes ago.

  • Harry Cole at The Sun: "Talk of candidates chosen Monday [24 Oct] with online vote of members with result next Friday [28 Oct], but currently no formally confirmed."
  • Rumours are of a 'moderate' triumvitate of former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Hunt, and Leader of the Commons Penny Mordaunt forming some form of unity ticket.
  • Given Sunak's divisive position in the party (disliked by supporters of former PM Boris Johnson) it could be that Mordaunt takes the PM's position, Hunt remains chancellor, and Sunak takes the office of foreign secretary.
  • However, given the clear divisions within the party gaining agreement on this speculated ticket could be very difficult.
