MNI BRIEF: Bloc No Longer Supports Trudeau Minority Government

MNI (OTTAWA) - Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal government lost the support of Bloc Quebecois leader Jean-Yves Blanchet on Tuesday after failing meet a deadline for passing legislation on seniors' benefits and farmer protections, boosting the potential for Canada's government to be forced into a snap election.

Blanchet's announcement comes weeks after the NDP ended a "supply and confidence" agreement with the Liberals. If those two parties join with the Conservatives who want an election now to pass a non-confidence vote, it would likely force an election ahead of one due next fall. Blanchet said the government's "days are numbered," adding that it's unclear what the NDP will do and the Bloc's vote would depend on the exact wording of a nonconfidence motion.
