MNI BRIEF:Canada Sees 3rd Covid Wave Risk, Extends Benefits 3M

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canada faces a third wave of Covid-19 that could be more devastating than the first two if local governments allow businesses to re-open too fast, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned Friday, while extending some relief checks by another 12 weeks.

"We could see a third wave that is even worse than the second and the first," especially with new variants of Covid-19 reaching Canada, Trudeau said at a press conference.

Opposition lawmakers have told MNI part of the problem is Trudeau's frayed plan to import vaccines from abroad, with the prime minister reiterating everyone will be vaccinated by September. The extra benefits will also add to a federal debt heading to a record CAD1 trillion.
