MNI BRIEF: Centeno Denies Formal Presidential PM Appointment

Bank of Portugal governor Mario Centeno on Monday denied that Portugal’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa appointed him to be prime minister in the wake of the political crisis triggered by last week's resignation of them PM Antonio Costa that ended in March 10 snap elections.

De Sousa invited Centeno to “reflect on the conditions” that could allow him to be PM, something that the BdP governor accepted to reflect on “in an exercise of citinzenship,” he said in a statement released by the Bank of Portugal on Monday.

With the fact that the president dissolved the parliament and called elections “it is unequivocal that the President of the Republic did not invite me to head the Government”, the statement says.
