MNI BRIEF: EU Can Be Independent Of Russia Gas - von der Leyen

(MNI) London

The European Union has been working to free itself from a dependence on Russian gas supplies and that has now been achieved, Commission President Ursula van der Leyen said Thursday.

Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Jens Stolteenberg and European Council President Charles Michel, von der Leyen said "We have spent time making sure we are independent, can be independent of Russian gas supplies -- we have now reached that stage."

Addressing the wider issue of stronger sanctions against Russia following the overnight invasion of Ukraine, von der Leyen said an announcement would be made later Thursday.
