MNI BRIEF: EU To Monitor Further UK Data Protection Divergence

(MNI) Brussels

The EU Commission said Tuesday it would monitor "very closely" developments in UK data protection rules. A Commission spokesperson said it had been aware of the risk of further divergence of UK data rules when it granted the UK adequacy status.

"Adequacy can be suspended, terminated or amended at any time by the Commission," a Commission spokesperson said. The comments follow a call from a UK minister today for a new, more flexible data protection regime in the wake of Brexit.

The comments come in what could be the next contentious issue between London and Brussels, even as there appears a glimmer of hope in EU/UK talks over Northern Ireland (MNI INTERVIEW: Chances Rising Of EU-UK Northern Ireland Deal Aug 25).
