German companies are planning to increase staff numbers as strong industrial activity continues to drive a recovery, with the labour market "slowly making up for some of the job losses from the coronavirus crisis," the Munich-based Ifo Institute said Wednesday.

Machinery and equipment manufacturing firms reported a pickup in hiring intentions, but also IT service providers, architecture and engineering companies are looking for new staff. Service sector hiring plans were unchanged at low level, while hospitality and tourism sector employees remain on furlough.

The Ifo April German employment barometer increased to 98.3, up from 97.6 in March, hitting the highest level since January 2020.
