MNI BRIEF:Lagarde Says Rates To Fall When Inflation Battle Won

(MNI) Brussels

The ECB will start to lower interest rates when it is sure that it has won the battle against inflation, ECB President Christine Lagarde said Thursday night in an interview with the France 2 TV channel.

“If we win the battle against inflation – and I am convinced we will – rates will start to go down,” Lagarde said. “Rates are at their highest now and they will not continue to rise,” she said.

Asked about a news report that she was offered the role of French foreign minister, Lagarde made clear that she has no intention of leaving Frankfurt. “When one has started a job and is making progress - and is on the point of winning the battle - one doesn’t leave the battlefield,” Lagarde said, noting recent significant declines in rates of inflation across the euro zone.
