MNI BRIEF: No Information About Possible China-US Meet: MOFCOM

The China-U.S. economic and trade teams maintain normal communications, said Gao Feng, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce at a briefing on Thursday, when asked to confirm media reports about possible meeting in China between the U.S. Treasury Secretary and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He.

"I currently don't have any knowledge regarding the U.S. media reports," said Gao, "We will release in time if there is further information."

Gao emphasized that both sides should work together to create an atmosphere and conditions to expand Sino-US trade cooperation, when asked to comment whether China could fall short of the import requirements set in the Phase One deal.

China's imports from the U.S. increased by 50.4% y/y in the first seven months, and its exports to the U.S. rose by 36.9%, indicating that the two economies are highly complementary, said Gao, noting that the additional tariffs imposed by the U.S. are harmful to both countries.
