MNI BRIEF: Trudeau Adds CAD37B Daycare Spending Over Five Yrs

MNI (OTTAWA) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a CAD37 billion programme for childcare over five years beginning in 2026 in one of his last days in office, adding more pressure to federal deficits after a pledge to keep them under CAD40 billion.

Trudeau said Thursday he's making the move to ensure deals negotiated with provincial governments who run the ten-dollar-a-day programs remain after he steps down. On Sunday former BOC Governor Mark Carney is expected to replace Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister.
