MNI BRIEF: Trudeau Says U.S. Tariffs Paused At Least 30 Days
MNI (OTTAWA) - The U.S. and Canada will pause implementing tariffs for at least 30 days, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday after a call with President Donald Trump, averting for now a trade war between two of the world's largest trading partners unseen in generations and lifting the country's dollar from the lowest since 2003.
Trudeau said he had "a good call" with Trump, a few hours after Mexico negotiated a similar pause that included promises of stronger border security. "Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering," Trudeau said.
